The Nature Photography Centre was opened 25.5.2007.

The purpose of the nature photography centre opened in the Tourist Centre Karhuntassu is to preserve and exhibit the lifework of Finland's most famous nature photographer Hannu Hautala. Other nature photographers are also able to put their work on display at the nature photography centre.

In Hannu's Footsteps - The Hannu Hautala Nature Photography Centre was launched by the Hannu Hautala Nature Photography Institute. With the funding of The Provincial State Office of Oulu as well as the Town of Kuusamo, a 150 square meter exhibition hall/nature photography centre was built in 2006-2007, with a gallery dedicated to Hannu Hautala's photographs and for media solutions especially designed for the nature photography centre. These media solutions also show Hannu Hautala's work throughout the years. The Hall of the Siberian Jay is reserved for the exhibitions of visiting photographers. The first visiting photographer is Arto Raappana from Oulu. He was the photographer of the year in 1984. The AV-presentations in the Hall of the Siberian Jay are by Professor Lauri Kettunen.

The Hannu Hautala Nature Photography Centre is implemented with the funding of the The Provincial State Office of Oulu as the Hannu Hautala Nature Photography Institute project (ERDF) in cooperation with the Town of Kuusamo, the University of Lapland (Faculty of Arts and Design), the Folk High School of Kuusamo, the Finnish Museum of Photography, the Arts Council of Oulu Province, the University of Oulu (Faculty of Humanities, Department of English) and the Natural Heritage Services of Metsähallitus. The Faculty of Arts and Design of the University of Lapland was responsible for designing the exhibition, that is, the design of the exhibition architecture and the media solutions.
